Personal web presence

I just wanted to pass along the url for the personal site I finished yesterday. It took me quite a while because I really wanted to get a structure in place that looked moderately slick but would be easily updateable (that can't be a real word). And I had to hand code the whole thing in notepad for my journalism class which further slowed my progess.

But it's done. Let me know if anyone has any input. I'd love to entertain some.

Thank you very much, Brooke. I actually had to use Notepad on my PC (same as Text Edit for OS X) because I was doing it for a class that required me to. I would have preferred to use DreamWeaver in split view, but I learned a lot from coding the whole thing myself.

I also used Photoshop and Illustrator to do the header stuff and edited photos in Fireworks. But the technology was only a portion of the process. I have become really interested in Information Architecture (it's basically design based on schema theory and psychology) and in that journalism class we look a lot into how people interact with the web and glean information from pages.

You might want to look at your site from the perspective of potential visitors and try to develop recognizable visual themes. Also, the TA from our class put together a great document describing the process he goes through when designing for a client.
Thanks again for the compliment. Best of luck to you.

Great job Ben! I really like your graphics and the fact that after you've visited a site, it gets crossed out rather than changes color - whenever I visit a site, I sometimes get confused as to which color means a visited link and which one is an unvisited link - great idea!

I also love the photos! That is awesome work! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Kathryn. I've actually been a little nervous about the strike-throughs on the visited links. I've already had two people ask me why once they've been to a link they can't go back. I pointed out the links still return to the same color if you roll over them again, but the critics don't seem to buy it.
But I definitely appreciate your input. I actually stole the strike-through idea from a page on the CSS Zen Garden.

Great looking site, Ben! As a guy who codes his sites from scratch without the use of Dreamweaver, I know its rough to do it in just Notepad. If you're ever coding from scratch again, you might want to consider this small, free, application called Crimson Editor (www.crimsoneditor.com) for Windows. It's a basic text editor (doesn't auto-complete as you code), but it does color-code your text once you have saved the file and given it an extension such as .html or .css. This small feature can be invaluable when you're trying to figure out where you're coding went funky.

Kudos though, I enjoyed reading through your site and found out a lot more about you. I just finished redoing my own site, but I think it would be a good idea for me to include a bit more personal information on it, so thanks for the inadvertent advice on this :)
